A couple of days ago, I asked you, if you would be interested in me sharing my experience with doing a juice cleanse. Thank you for the many responses that I got and your interest towards fasting and juicing. I basically did this cleanse to help my body recover, heal and obviously detoxify. I know that my body is capable of detoxification all on its own since it is such an incredibly complex system. However, the past few weeks, I felt like my body needed a little help to get back on track again.
Let me tell you a little story – the story leading up to my decision to do another juice cleanse. I know this is a controversial topic but let’s be open-minded and simply appreciate our different experiences with certain nutrition subjects. I have done my research and so should you. Especially, since I am by no means entitled to give any medical advice. Having said that, let’s dive into my story.
I have done two cleanses before. However, they always incorporated smoothies and some nuts and seeds as solid foods. This time I truly stuck to only juices and the nut milk for dinner. Leading up to my cleanse, I experienced a lot of troubles with my stomach. Well, to be honest, this is old news. If you have watched my video explaining why I am eating a plant-based diet and read my posts on that matter, you are probably aware of my sensitive system and hard to please stomach. Since I can remember my stomach always got me into trouble. I had to fight many sicknesses, whilst I was younger leading up to being an adult. Having a stomach that felt like it was unwell was basically the norm for a while.
Since changing my diet, slowly but steadily things have changed for the better. However, I am not quite there yet. Hence, I constantly fight against way too many food intolerances and allergies, which sadly make my food choices at times feeling a little restrictive. Not exactly when I am preparing food at home since I love eating a plant-based diet and wouldn’t want to have it any other way. However, when I eat out and even a clean and plant-based meal does no good, I can get quite upset.
I am already, seeing doctors and naturopaths for a while now but so far we couldn’t pinpoint the main issue. If I would be the one to guess, I would pinpoint some cross-relation with self-imposed stress amongst other things. How else can it be that my system still reacts so sensitive to this many clean and healthy foods? In the end, I am sharing this to uplift you and not to tell you a story of struggle. I know how many of us deal with those modern day issues and therefore I feel like sharing helps us to not feel so alone with what we go through. Especially, when you are getting judged for the choices you make for your own health’s sake.
To get closer to the point, my stomach sensitivities have gone through ups and downs for the past years. My most recent good time was while I was living in Milan. For around four months, I hardly had any issues. Fact is, I didn’t do anything differently either. A couple of weeks ago, I felt my issues increasing again and when I went to a restaurant and had a soup which I guess had too much onion and garlic in it, I basically felt so bad that I needed to give my body and stomach a break. I didn’t feel myself any longer.
Hence, I searched for a beautiful juice bar in Rotterdam, the place I am currently at, to do a juice cleanse with them. My hopes were to get my stomach back to normal, feeling less bloated and hurting, having a less reactive stomach to all sorts of foods and just giving my system a break. My decision also stems from the fact that in the past few weeks, I have read up a lot on Ayurveda, cleansing, fasting and other treatments to provide you with a kind of reset for your system. Hence, I signed myself up for a juice cleanse, with five juices per day and a nut milk for dinner. The first two days, I mixed fruit and vegetable juices and the third day I mostly had green juices to get me through the day.
Surprisingly, I didn’t feel hungry during the cleanse and was completely fine and satisfied with the juices, nut milk, tea, coconut water and water that I fueled myself with. I had a very easy transition into the cleanse and out of it as well. On the first day, I felt pretty good with just minor headaches and bloating. On the second day, I felt like I had drunk too much but other than that I felt really good. On the third day, I experienced some minor detoxification effect and knew that my body was flushing out what was left in there. After the third day, my stomach felt calmer, so far it has not reacted to any more of my safe foods. It was truly easy to get back into eating my favourite solid foods. Hence, right now, I feel like, I achieved the goal of this juice fast. Surely, I have not fixed my allergies and intolerances. However, I feel like myself again. And this is what matters right this moment.
In the end, I hope that I can spark a more positive conversation around cleansing. I don’t want to list all the said benefits of cleansing since I think this is something you should be hearing from an actual nutritionist. However, I can say, that for me a cleanse just became something that I will reach back to when nothing else seems to help again. The feeling that it brought to me, made it worth it. The cleanse truly offered all I could hope for and the experience improved my perceived health at least for now. It has settled my stomach which makes me glad that I can feel a little more like myself again.
